"So agile!" Oliver chirped and swooped down, above the beasts head, he pecked its ear and continued on. "Come on Pheonix! Er, Amber. What should I call you now?" Small talk while being near a top predator, not the brightest idea.

"Oh, shove off!" Amber pushed off the creatures snout and flapped a little frantically up to him. "You can call me Amber. Phoenix isn't my name." Amber retorted. Then she looked apologetic. Phoenix was the title others gave her after the burning of her home. It didn't take people long to realize she was the "ghost" that had escaped. "Anyways..." Amber didn't get to finish what she was saying as large, canine filled jaws snapped shut inches from her tail. "Eep!" She squeaked as she tried to gain air above the bear's head.

Oliver chuckled. "Good, I like that name better." He chirped quietly. Then he gave a frightened screech as the bear lunged upwards. "Let's go above the treetops." He chattered and pumped his yellow wings higher.

Soaring up alongside her friend Amber broke through the trees to see dark gray clouds ahead. "Looks like trouble!" A gust of wind buffeted her about. Tilting down she landed in the top of a thick fir tree. It bent slightly with her weight. She needed to get down lower. A speck of rain hit her beak. "Oliver! We may as well wait it out." She called. No point in trying to fly any farther and take the chance of getting swept up in a storm.

The finch raised his head to gaze at the roiling dark clouds. Electricity was building up inside the clouds. Head splitting thunder boomed. "Yeah, you're right. Lets find a roost." He angled his wings down towards the forest, cutting through the turbulent air like a knife.

Amber chose her perch in a large oak. The leaves so thick it was sure to keep her dry. The firebird fluffed and resettled her feathers into a more organized arrangement. She shook her head as well, trying to rid it of any intimidating thoughts about the wisdom she might choose should she survive nd make it that far. She pressed herself against the trunk at the base of a branch and closed her eyes letting the wind rip through the trees.

The finch hopped from foot to foot and huddled against the trunk. The branches reined together above him and the leaves formed an umbrella-like shield. Wind filled the air with noise, while rain thundered down like bullets around him.

Amber gingerly tucked herself down. She gazed out into the sheets of gray mist. Her orange eyes beginning to look sleepy.

In no time the pattering of the storm lulled Oliver to sleep. The wind hardly impenetrated his feathers, causing him to feel cool and at peace, though his dreams were anything but.
He dreamed that when the fire started that he had failed to find a way out for Amber and the chick. In that scenario they had died and Oliver was left with a burning guilt. His subconscious mind thought that though Anber did not fully realize tgat Oliver had saved her, it didnt matter, because he wasn't a hero for glory. He saved the chick and Amber because he cared. And even though it hurt, he let it go.

Amber watched Oliver slip away into sleep and thought briefly about getting some for herself but as soon as she closed her eyes she saw the burning timbers from two villages. Snapping them back open she chirped in annoyance. No sleep for her tonight. She could still feel the searing heat singing her feathers. Shivering with sudden cold she hopped down to where Oliver was and huddled up against him. She kept a watchful eye knowing if he woke up she would have to jump to the side. She watched lightening lash out across the sky and finally without realizing it, she had drifted to sleep on his shoulder letting the thunder and rain be her lullaby.

-waking up-
Slowly Oliver gained conciousness. First he felt the cool wind in his feathers. The he felt the dunno his wings, warmth seeping into his bones. The he felt Amber beside him, leaning against him. Leaning against him?!
Oliver jolted awake, taking no extra time transitioning. The finch immediately took flight and glided to the next branch over. There he watched her furtively.

Amber was sleeping peacefully until her support disappeared. With a terrorized squawk she tumbled forward. Landing awkwardly on her back on a branch below she coughed and glared up at Oliver. "Warn me next time." She groaned flipping herself over. She arranged her sprawled feathers back into decent order and turned her back to him to comb through her wings with her beak. 'Ugh...no wonder he jumped up. I was leaning on him. He doesn't like me like that, stars I'll have to watch myself.' She wouldn't turn to look at him and had absolutely nothing to say. Flustered and annoyed she sat there.

Oliver just blinked, his yellow and black feathers puffed up, making him took rather like a lemon. He nodded quickly and hopped from one black twig-like four to another. His tiny black claws clinging to the branch. "Lets go." he motioned to the giant oak in the center of the forest. He wiggled his wings and spread the golden feathers out.

"Sounds good." She said fluttering up to him. She still refused to look him in the eye. "But, seriously, warn me next time." She gave him a shy grin and took off. Using the wind to her aid. She sped off towards the huge oak tree where something strange awaited them.

As Oliver took off, he immediately felt more comfortable. The winnd flowed around him, taking him closer to the great oak. The air smelled buttery and crisp. It was nice. The golden finch circled a large acorn before plucking it off. The abnormally large but immediately weighed him down. "A little help here?" He grunted through a halfway open beak. He was slowly falling towards the forest floor, his light wings barely keeping them airborne.
